GAC Plans To Launch Solid-state Battery-powered Electric Vehicles in 2026

The business suggestions that GAC’s pure solid-state batteries have an energy density of over 400 Wh/kg and should allow electric cars to reach over 1,000 km in range, as required by Chinese regulations. The manufacturer reportedly made this announcement at a technology day that it organised, according to sources in Chinese media.

According to a corporate statement, the creation of a solid-state battery is as challenging as climbing Mount Everest and calls for innovations in materials, design, production, and integration. The battery has already made the transition from lab testing to mass manufacturing, according to GAC.

Initial applications for the new solid-state batteries will be in cars under the high-end Hyper brand, which debuted in September 2022. Under this new name, the company has already introduced the Hyper SSR and Hyper GT models, both of which are built on the 900-volt AEP 3.0 platform.

GAC is working with the China National Space Administration and running its own research lab, the Hyper Scientific Research Laboratory, with the goal of producing cutting-edge high-end vehicles. The new premium brand’s 2022 presentation stated that advancements would be made in a number of areas, including AI control, unique materials, and aerodynamics.

The brand is now focusing on solid-state batteries as part of its innovation. These batteries are being included into series models by other Chinese manufacturers as well. Take SAIC Motor’s electric vehicle division, IM Motors, as an example. It said that solid-state batteries would be featured in the top-tier edition of its recently unveiled IM L6 electric saloon. Talent New Energy, a supplier, has demonstrated a solid-state battery cell prototype with a capacity of 120 Ah, which might potentially enable a range of around 2,000 km.
