Sydney Hosts Chery’s Omoda GT and E5 Debuts

Chery held a media event in Sydney where it unveiled two new vehicles from its updated 2024 lineup. The mid-life upgrade for the Omoda 5 small SUV series includes a new GT model that is expected to deliver better performance.

The new performance edition is powered by a more potent 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that generates 275Nm of torque at 2000 rpm and 137kW of power at 5500 rpm. A 7-speed dual clutch gearbox supports it.

The GT will come with bigger braking hardware and a multi-link rear suspension to enhance driving characteristics. It will be offered in two- and all-wheel drive versions. The new model and its EV counterpart are components of a deliberate attempt to increase range.

In particular, major and welcome modifications have been made to ADAS safety systems as part of their programme to better adapt vehicles for Australian roads. The 2024 Omoda 5 petrol range will cost you $34,490 if you drive away.

You can purchase the 1.5-liter turbo BX 2WD for that amount, and the new GT AWD will cost $41,490 to drive. We, along with other media representatives, had the opportunity to see up close the entry-level Omoda E5, the brand’s maiden attempt at entering the Australian EV market.

The front wheels of the E5 are driven by a single electric motor that produces 150kW of power and 340Nm of torque. Ninety percent of the EV’s interior is distinct from that of the gasoline-powered model, despite visual similarities.

The model promises access to “advanced electric vehicle technology without compromising on performance or style,” with a suggested range of 430 km and a sprint time of 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds.
